I once was asked, "Who is the wisest man in Athens?" I honestly did not know, and in complete determination I set out to find the wisest man in Athens. The Oracle stated I, Socrates was the wisest man in Athens. I knew this was absolutely impossible, so I set out on a search. To my surprise I found, the Oracle could have been correct because every man in Athens attempted to defend and elevate his knowledge in an effort to make himself seem the wisest of all. I have not been present for many years and so I decided to try this same experiment today. I found even more people claimed themselves to be the wisest man in Athens. Pride is even more prevalent today. How sad this makes me. Every conversation I had, I was able to show that person he or she was not the wisest person in the world. All I did was question. Something I think people these days need to learn to do more of. We must look upward to find true wisdom.
Wow, what irony! People today are full of pride. I really respect how you don't accept money for teaching, Socrates. I'm glad to see that you follow your own teaching, or "practice what you preach," as it were. And from reading your thoughts on this blog, I wouldn't doubt the Great Oracle's words!
